Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
