In the dying moments, unbridled joy broke out for Chelsea and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández forced home a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola ranting in frustration and handed the temporary Chelsea manager a unforgettable moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane represented the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch in class, making the recollection of Fernández's pivotal intervention one to warm the 40-year-old throughout his career.

A Stark Contrast in Experience

On the City bench was the generation's pre-eminent figure, a man with an unparalleled CV for football's giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, overseeing his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, stood a former coach at non-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and stepped up to make his first-team debut after being seconded from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, headlined by Chelsea's key midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task started out as a mission that seemed Mission: Impossible.

“Whirlwind” was the adjective McFarlane used to sum up his experience since being handed the role.

The first trick at City's fortress is to avoid an early goal, as a rout can swiftly follow. An early Chelsea defender header clear from a corner signalled the visitors' goal was under pressure immediately, yet McFarlane's side proved spirited throughout the contest.

“Feisty” would be an apt description of how McFarlane instructed his charges to play. A strong Reece James challenge on Rodri, which left City's totem in a heap, showed the caretaker had instilled a mindset with no inferiority complex.

Another element of his game plan was to maximise disruption. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea slowed at a dead ball, a sure sign the hosts' rhythm was being broken up and the Guardiola blueprint was being frustrated.

Twists and a Memorable Finale
