Multiple Hurt as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts A Delta Airlines Plane Landing at Sydney, Australia

Several people were hurt after a Delta Airlines jet traveling from LA to Sydney, Australia encountered turbulence on Friday morning.

Delta Flight 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it touched down at Sydney Airport, a company official informed. Several cabin crew members sustained injuries.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service reported they evaluated five individuals, and transported a trio to a medical facility with non-life-threatening injuries that such as spinal discomfort and migraines. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.

It is the newest example of planes being hit by turbulence, with experts pointing out that shifting climate patterns is a significant contributor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the representative added, adding that the plane touched down "safely and normally" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday.

The NSW Ambulance Service reported they received a call just only 180 seconds ahead of the plane arrived, and emergency vehicles were standing by on the runway.

The reasons turbulence is becoming more frequent - and more severe.

In the previous year, twenty-five passengers and crew sustained injuries when another Delta jet, flying from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, encountered "severe" turbulence just a couple of hours into the long-haul flight, and had to make an precautionary landing.

Recently, travelers and staff on a Singapore Airlines jet went through a harrowing brief five-second bout of severe turbulence. One passenger passed away and dozens were injured, as those without seatbelts were thrown from their seats and were slammed back.

Turbulence is fairly routine on aircraft journeys, and while occurrences of rough conditions appear to be increasing, they are still very rare.

Data suggests that there are around 5,000 incidents of severe-or-greater turbulence annually, out of a total of over 35 million journeys that currently occur worldwide.

Severe turbulence is described as when the vertical motions of a plane going through disturbed air apply in excess of 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - enough to lift you out of your seat if you did not have on a seatbelt.

As a changing climate shifts atmospheric conditions, experts warn that commercial aviation could become less smooth: temperature changes and shifting wind patterns in the upper atmosphere are likely to increase the regularity and severity of significant turbulence.
