Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
