The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
